(mis)Komunikasi

Pagi gw hari ini dibuka dengan artikel nyeleneh. Isinya mengenai pengalaman-pengalaman para dokter saat berhadapan dengan pasien-pasien ngeyel dan kurang berpendidikan. Disertai kutipan kata-kata para pasien yang, ditinjau dari sudut pandang profesi dokter, tidak masuk akal. Atau, kasarnya, bodoh.

Sebelumnya gw ingatkan dulu kalau para dokter tidak jauh beda dengan para pekerja lainnya. Antar sesama rekan profesi, kami suka saling bertukar cerita mengenai pekerjaan kami. Pernah kan dalam pekerjaan ketemu klien aneh, nyebelin, atau apa saja yang bikin jengkel saat dihadapin? Dan akhirnya jadi bahan cerita di akhir jam kerja? Gw rasa semua profesi pasti pernah mengalami hal yang sama.

Artikel yang gw baca pagi ini cukup bikin gw senyum-senyum sendiri. Gw bisa mengerti perasaan para dokter yang berbagi cerita, secara gw sering mengalami hal yang sama. Sempat terpikir untuk membagi artikel tersebut ke linimasa. Tapi akhirnya gw berpikir sendiri:

“Apakah yang jelas remeh dan tidak logis di mata para dokter juga jelas remeh dan tidak logis di mata para pasien?”

Ada satu hal yang gw anggap menarik setelah gw mulai bekerja, dimana sebagian besar waktu gw bukan lagi dihabiskan dengan buku pelajaran, tapi dengan pasien. Saat belajar, para calon dokter dituntut untuk memaksimalkan fungsi otak supaya bisa mengerti dan melogikakan sistem super ribet, mulai dari yang fisiologis sampai yang patologis. Butuh kombinasi antara menghafal dan berlogika. Yang menarik? Setelah mulai berinteraksi dengan pasien, para dokter justru dituntut untuk menyederhanakan ilmu kedokteran yang segitu njelimetnya dan menerjemahkannya ke dalam bahasa yang bisa dimengerti oleh masyarakat awam. Ada banyak buku yang mengajarkan tentang patofisiologi. Tapi satu-satunya cara untuk belajar berkomunikasi dengan pasien hanyalah dengan sebanyak mungkin berinteraksi dengan pasien.

Coba bayangkan adegan berikut. Kita lagi jalan-jalan di Roma dan kebingungan cari pintu keluar. Setelah bingung sana-sini, kita mencolek salah satu orang Italia dan bertanya, “Sori, bro, pintu keluar dimana ya?” Dan si Italia mendengus tidak sabar lalu menjawab, “Jelas-jelas itu ada tulisan ‘Uscita’ segede gaban, ya di situlah pintu keluarnya!” Jengkel? Tapi kenyataanya, kadang kita begitu terbiasa dengan dunia kita sendiri sampai kita lupa bahwa dokter dan pasien sebenernya bicara dalam bahasa yang berbeda. Gw pernah ketemu ibu-ibu yang, setelah ketemu dosis obat hipertensi yang pas, malah menolak melanjutkan minum obat. Alasannya, takut kalau lanjut minum obat hipertensi setiap hari, tensinya yang sudah normal justru akan semakin turun. Gw sempet merasa lucu. Tapi itu hanya salah satu dari sekian banyak contoh yang menunjukan bahwa apa yang logis buat dokter, belum tentu logis buat pasien. Sedangkan kalau bicara soal kesehatan, semua orang, dari yang tua, muda, kaya, miskin, sekolah, ga sekolah, pasti mau sehat. Yang artinya, mau gak mau, dokter akan berinteraksi dengan manusia dari berbagai macam lapisan dan latar belakang. Dan sebagai orang yang dianggap ilmunya lebih tinggi, pastinya dokter lah yang dituntut untuk bisa mensejajarkan cara berkomunikasi dengan lawan bicaranya. 

Jadi, sejawat, sebelum kita tertawa mendengar komentar-komentar "konyol" pasien kita, coba yuk introspeksi dulu. Sudahkah kita mengedukasi pasien kita dengan baik? Apakah semua informasi yang diperlukan sudah diterima tanpa ada miskomunikasi? Kalau jawabannya "sudah" dan masih aja pasien ngeyel, apalagi ditambah dengan ilmu-ilmu sesat a la internet, nah, baru deh kita mulai ketawa.

Setelah bekerja, barulah gw inget kata-kata para sesepuh di kampus dulu, bahwa pekerjaan dokter bukan sekedar mengobati penyakit, tapi mengobati manusia. Dan jadi dokter berarti harus siap belajar seumur hidup. Karena butuh pengertian mendalam untuk bisa menyederhanakan sesuatu. Seperti kata opa Einstein, if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.

Setelah sedikit berefleksi, gw rasa artikel kocak pagi ini cukup dibagi di kalangan sejawat aja. Batal deh berbagi ke linimasa.

Sekedar curhat tentang pekerjaan

Tugas utama dokter adalah memberi edukasi. Mulai dari pencegahan penyakit, memberi penjelasan tentang penyakit pasien, cara mengontrol penyakit baik dari gaya hidup maupun terapi farmakologi. Itu pun baru sebagian kecil.

Tapi yang jelas tugas dokter BUKAN memberikan pemeriksaan penunjang dan obat sesuai permintaan pasien. Kalau pulang dapat servis atau barang sesuai pesanan itu biasanya di restoran, di warung atau di salon. Yang jelas bukan di tempat praktek dokter.

Jadi...

Jangan bilang "ga diapa-apain sama dokternya" saat pulang tanpa bawa obat tapi dinasehati untuk jaga pola makan dan rajin olahraga.

Jangan bilang "ga diobatin sama dokternya" saat datang dengan demam sehari tapi tidak dikasih antibiotik. 

Jangan bilang "dokternya ga ngerti apa-apa" saat pulang dari dokter bawa antibiotik CUMA sepuluh butir.

Jangan bilang "saya mau endoskopi karena sudah lama sakit maag tidak sembuh-sembuh" saat ditanya "keluhannya apa?"

Saat memeriksaan diri ke dokter, otomatis pasien mempercayakan dirinya untuk diperiksa oleh dokter. Jadilah pasien cerdas. Silahkan sepuas-puasnya menggunakan hak pasien untuk mendapat informasi penuh mengenai penyakit dan segala tindakan yang diambil dokter. Setelah mendapat penjelasan, silahkan gunakan hak pasien untuk menyetujui atau menolak tindakan dokter. Dan saat anda tidak puas terhadap pelayanan yang didapat, silahkan gunakan hak untuk mendapat second opinion dari dokter lain.

Tapi sangatlah tidak etis mengintervensi pekerjaan orang lain -dalam bidang apapun- karena setiap orang bekerja di setiap lapangan kerja sesuai kemampuan dan pengetahuannya masing-masing.

Someday You Will Miss Today

Maybe days, weeks, years, even decades from now you will forget the feeling of the wind caressing your face, or the soft sand under your feet, or how the waves envelop your body and hurl you to the beach. But the emotions remain. That ineffable blissfulness amidst our exchanged stories, our jokes and our laughs in those times we shared stays forever for us to keep.

Everyday we are creating memories. So make each day count to make sure we make beautiful memories worth to remember.

My Kinda Miracles

Since I moved back to Jayapura, I've developed this habit of looking up at the sky in so many random moments. Simply to enjoy the view of clear night sky dotted with twinkling stars. Or shades of pink and purple staining the twilight sky.

But there was this one time when I had few of my friends came to my house. We were chatting when the electricity suddenly went out, so we decided to move our group chat outside the house. Out of habit, I glanced up at the sky and that was when I saw the most beautiful night sky. The darkness, enhanced by the absence of electricity across town, goaded more stars to make appearances. The sky wasn't just dotted, it was scattered with stars. It was the first time I saw so many stars in the sky, I was awed. So awed that I excitedly told my friends to have a look. It was as if glitters were messily sprinkled across a vast velvet black carpet. I wasn't so eloquent then, using the word chicken-pox to described the starry sky.

Living in a small town has rendered me more appreciative towards things I previously tend to overlook, like  the changing colors of the sky, that unique scent that lingers in the break of dawn, the silver water reflecting the sunlight on its surface. You cannot help feeling amazed and belittled at the same time. It is impossible to deny that there are mighty Hands that created this colossal universe and that everything can be encapsulated into one word: miracle.

I now find it ridiculous how we have our own complicated concept of miracles. We demand to see water turns into wine to challenge the existence of God. When every single day there are so many miracles unfolding before our very eyes. And that our lives are series of miracles. You just have to notice and appreciate.

Anyway.

A blackout is occurring as I'm writing. This is just my rhapsody, composed out of disappointment as I found rolls of clouds hanging on the sky, denied me of the stars.

Negeri Para Bedebah

 

Suatu malam, Thomas, seorang penasehat keuangan profesional, mendapat panggilan dari Om Liem, adik papanya yang dimusuhinya selama bertahun-tahun, untuk meminta bantuannya karena bank milik Om Liem, Bank Semesta, terancam ditutup.  

Thomas membuat keputusan untuk membantu pamannya. Dan untuk menyelamatkan Bank Semesta, dia hanya punya waktu dua hari. Dalam perjalanannya, Thomas mengumpulkan potongan teka-teki dan menyadari bahwa kasus yang dihadapinya bukan sekedar masalah bisnis. Tapi personal. Dan Thomas bertekad menyelesaikan masalah ini demi membalaskan dendam masa lalunya.

Negeri Para Bedebah adalah pengalaman pertama gw dengan Tere Liye. Sekilas browsing buku-bukunya di toko buku, sepertinya kebanyakan bertema cinta, baik pada keluarga maupun pasangan. Tapi, berdasarkan review di linimasa Goodreads maupun Twitter, sepertinya Negeri Para Bedebah mengusung tema yang berbeda. 

Dari gambar sampulnya, tema dari Negeri Para Bedebah sudah bisa dikira-kira. Pria berpakaian rapih lengkap dengan jas dan dasi, menggunakan topeng. Topengnya berhidung panjang pula. Mengingatkan kita pada Pinokio yang hidungnya bertambah panjang setiap mengucapkan kebohongan. Untuk memperkuat pesan yang disampaikan, ditambahkan gambar musang berbulu domba. Hmm.. Sepertinya menarik.

Pada beberapa bab pertama novel ini, gw sempat dibuang pusing dengan segala istilah-istilah ekonomi dan perbankan. Mohon maaf, gw tidak tertarik di bidang itu. Walaupun penjelasan itu diselipkan dalam percakapan, tetap saja rasanya seperti baca textbook. Tapi gw ngerti kenapa penjelasan-penjelasan itu harus disertakan dalam cerita. Gw sih hajar bleh aja, tetep berusaha ngerti walaupun nyantolnya sedikit. Tapi setelah berhasil melewati bab-bab awal, jalan cerita mulai terbentuk.

Negeri Para Bedebah mengusung tema suspense, mystery dengan bumbu action. Sayangnya, menurut selera gw, bumbunya lebih banyak mengambil porsi. Gw adalah penggemar cerita misteri, pengkhianatan, yang jalan ceritanya ga bisa ditebak dan tokoh-tokoh yang muncul ternyata tidak seperti dugaan kita. There's a reason why I love Dan Brown. Robert Langdon itu ga bisa berantem. Tapi dia bisa lepas dari musuh-musuhnya dan memecahkan misteri dengan akalnya (Just to be clear, gw adalah penggemar Dan Brown sebelum gw menyadari jalan cerita semua novelnya ternyata sama dan pada akhirnya gw berhenti baca novel-novelnya).

Thomas adalah tokoh utama yang menarik. Gw suka Thomas mostly karena dia smart. Semakin jauh membaca, cerita pun semakin menarik. Suspense mulai dibangun. Beberapa kali kita diajak mengintip masa lalu Thomas yang membentuk karakternya serta melatarbelakangi cerita tentang Bank Semesta. Dalam waktu dua hari berpetualang bersama Thomas, masalah yang awalnya hanya berlatarbelakang bisnis ternyata berkembang lebih jauh menjadi masalah yang lebih personal. Alangkah senangnya gw kalau cerita lebih banyak fokus ke misteri pengkhianatan di balik kasus Bank Semesta dan akal-akal Thomas dalam mengendalikan 'bidak-bidaknya' demi menyelamatkan Bank Semesta. 

Yang gw sayangkan:

1.  Tidak banyak tokoh dari masa lalu Thomas dan keluarganya yang bisa dijadikan tersangka dalam kasus Bank Semesta. Jadi yah, tebak-tebakannya kurang seru dan dari awal sudah bisa dikira-kiralah siapa otak di belakang cerita.
2. Kisah misterinya kalah porsi sama actionnya. Yang mana, menurut gw, actionnya kurang menarik pula. Terlalu banyak adegan dimana Thomas dikepung polisi dan sukses melepaskan diri dalam waktu singkat. Setiap mau melangkah, pasti adegannya terulang. Terlalu banyak tokoh yang 'kebetulan' terlibat dan bisa membantu Thomas kabur. Sampai-sampai gregetnya jadi berkurang dan pada akhirnya gw cuma berpikir, "Ah, palingan di akhir bab dia udah bebas lagi." Oh well..

Denger-denger novel ini diangkat dari kasus Bank bernama mirip yang terjadi entah tahun berapa itu. Sebagai orang yang tidak hobi mengikuti berita, ga heran lah kalau gw ga tahu menahu tentang kasus yang nyata terjadi itu. Gw menikmati Negeri Para Bedebah murni sebagai kisah fiksi. Walaupun dalam beberapa hal gw kurang puas, secara keseluruhan Negeri Para Bedebah cukup menarik untuk diikuti. Ga terlalu pas dengan selera gw, tapi jelas well-written dan sukses mengangkat topik yang jarang diangkat oleh penulis Indonesia lainnya. I can totally understand the hype.

Warm Bodies

Should I mention, yet again, that I am not a fan of dystopian? But here's another dystopian reading and I found myself liking it, yet again.

Warm Bodies sets in a time where a mysterious plague has invaded the world and divided humanity into two categories. The Dead and the Living. This is a dead end world where the Deads eat the Living and the Living live their life constantly training on how to keep themselves save from the Dead Not exactly an ideal life.

R is one of the Deads, also known as Zombie. On his way hunting the Living, he met Julie. While the Deads feed on the Living, instead, R decided to take Julie home. Once they got to know each other, R and Julie decided they want to make a change together. For a better world.

I read this book in order to join my very first book discussion ever. The event is held by @BookClubID and the participants are going to discuss the book together, via twitter, on April. Honestly, I was kind of disappointed when Nic, the admin, picked dystopian for our first genre. Not only I am not a fan of dystopian, I also have an aversion to stories about zombie. It always feel too scifi-ish and too future-ish. I almost decided to skip on the first book discussion. Thank goodness I didn't go with my instinct.

The first thing couldn't escape my attention was the writing. OH MY GOD! Found another author who made it to the list of authors-I-love-for-their-writing, together with Melina Marchetta and Laini Taylor. So very beautiful. I finished the book with so many highlighted passages. To think that I found these beautiful quotes in a story about an ugly world infected by a deadly plague is just overwhelming.

While, in my opinion, Julie's character doesn't really stand out, when I started this book I didn't anticipate that I will have my fangirl-mode turned on during reading. It sounds really absurd to say that I love R, -because he's, you know, a zombie- but I do. Since the story is told from R's point of view, it's expected that R stands out so much. I love that he is a very eloquent narrator, yet with his limited capability to talk, he managed to deliver what he had in mind in just a few syllables. This cheeseball zombie got me all teary a few times.

When together with R, I love Julie. I love that she stands up for herself and not one of those damsels in distress. Because, honestly, I've had enough with those kind of heroines every authors came up with lately. I love how R and Julie struggle together to start a better world. Ah.. This is so The Beatles. (The band is Julie's favorite, by the way)

I'm not one who look for 'messages' in a book, because to me book is there to tell story. But the 'message' in this story is very clear. That we usually fear things we don't understand and mark it as a threat. But if we try to understand, it might not be as bad as we thought. It might even surprise us. Beautiful, isn't it?

If there's one thing I don't really enjoy about this book, it's the setting. No matter how much I enjoy the story and all, I am just not a fan of post-apocalyptic world. The world where R and Julie live that I imagined in my head is really dull. And I hate that.

If you think this story feels familiar, well, that's not surprising. Warm Bodies is a spin-off of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Even by now I'm sure the main character's names, R and Julie, ring a bell, huh?

All in all, I love that I gave this book a try. I love the diction, I love the story, I love the characters. I did enjoy reading this book. I believe this book might appeal even to those who don't usually read dystopian. And imagining Nicholas Hoult as R sure make reading the book even more enjoyable!

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden

Callie and Kayden grew up in the same neighborhood with him didn't acknowledge her at all. He was the quarterback and she was a loner. Until one night, Callie saved Kayden from his abusive father.

Months after the incident, they met in college. They got close with each other and the attraction between then was undeniable. However, there's something happened in Callie's past that kept her from trusting people, let alone being in a relationship. While Kayden had secret that made him think that Callie deserved better.

I’ve been reading too many romance novels lately, I wonder if it kinda deadens my excitement towards this particular genre that happens to be my favorite. After a few of unimpressive readings, I had high hopes when I started The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden. But this disappointed me even more.

There is already a long line of books about two people with dark secrets, meet each other, understand each other and fall in love. In order to stand out, please make it interesting?

In the beginning of the story, the author, I think, try to taunt the readers with bits and pieces of Callie and Kayden's dark secrets. I was fine with that. Where's the fun if everything was revealed since the very beginning? However, the story goes on and on, developing the chemistry between Callie and Kayden, focusing too much on their daily interactions and how they were weighing whether or not the relationship is worth it, keeping aside the development of the thing that kept them from being together in the first place. Their "dark secrets".

Callie's secret is obvious, even from the beginning. There's no taunting necessary. The culprit wasn't revealed until near the end of the book when really it was already obvious since the very beginning. In contrast, throughout the book, Kayden is all 'I have a secret I have to tell you but now is not the time' but apparently 'the time' is not until the very end of the book. So yeah, the taunting. It's boring.

Also, some minors. I know Seth and Luke are just sidekicks but I wish there were more about them. Like, what’s the deal with Braiden and Amy? Why mentioned it if there were nothing more to it? Is it just to make it appears as if everyone’s life in this book is a mess? Seth is supposed to play an important role. He’s the first guy Callie shared her secrets with. He keeps mentioning about how much he cares about Callie. But what is it that Seth did that earned Callie’s trust? But there wasn’t even a story about that. He's even kinda forgotten once Kayden got into the picture.

I was kinda bored when reading this; I even think the cliffhanger is where things finally got a little bit exciting. It’s unnecessary, though. Just a way to expand the already dragging story. Had the secrets developed earlier, the story could end in just one book.
